(2022) Grateful Dead – Dave’s Picks Vol. 44 Autzen Stadium, Eugene, OR 1990-06-23 Review: The Grateful Dead’s Dave’s Picks Volume 44 will contain official audio of the band’s June 23, 1990 concert at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon. The final release in the 2022 Dave’s Picks series goes on sale next Tuesday, October 18 at 10 a.m. PT via Dead.net. Summer 1990 would be keyboardist Brent Mydland’s final tour before his tragic death from an accidental overdose on July 26, 1990. A lineup featuring Mydland, guitarists Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh and drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart played 20 shows between June 8 and July 23, 1990. The concert at Autzen Stadium on June 23, 1990 was the first of two nights at the venue located north of the University of Oregon campus. Little Feat opened both nights in Eugene with the Dead starting the show on the 23rd by performing a high-energy “Feel Like A Stranger.” Garcia then led the group through “West L.A. Fadeaway” before Weir helmed “Me And My Uncle.” The group tore through “Cumberland Blues” next with Mydland’s lone turn in the vocal spotlight coming on the “Far From Me” that ensued. A dynamic pairing of “They Love Each Other” and “Cassidy” followed before the sextet ended the evening’s first set with strong versions of “Tennessee Jed” and “Promised Land.” A highlight of the night was the 15-minute “Eyes Of The World” that began the second set at Autzen Stadium. “Eyes” melted into Bobby’s “Looks Like Rain,” which gave way to a gorgeous “Crazy Fingers.” The Grateful Dead then fit “Uncle John’s Band” within “Playing In The Band” to lead into Kreutzmann and Hart’s “Drums” segment. From there, the instrumentalists took a trip to “Space” that landed on “The Wheel” once The Rhythm Devils returned. The second set concluded with a rousing “I Need A Miracle” sung by Weir and a goosebump-inducing “Morning Dew.” For the encore, the Grateful Dead went with the day-appropriate “One More Saturday Night.” Impresario Bill Graham promoted the show and took the stage to thank the bands and audience at the end of the night. — jambase Track List: 01 - Feel Like A Stranger 02 - West L.A.
